Weldon Loyd Smith

Weldon was born on January 11, 1932 to Matthew and Matha Smith. He was born at home in Strawn into a family of four boys and one girl. Weldon left this world on December 3, 2022 at almost 91 years of age.

He graduated from Strawn High School in 1949. He received his degree from Abilene Christian College. After graduation he was drafted and served in the Army where he was stationed in Germany until 1957. When he returned from Germany he moved to Garland, TX where he began what would become one of his life’s passions teaching and coaching kids. He started a tumbling team and then started a track program for girls at Garland that grew from a handful of girls to 12 coaches and over 200 athletes. He was chairman of the PE Commission in Garland and on the judging team of South Association of Colleges and
Universities testing accreditation. He established the Garland Bunny Hop and Turkey Trots race events and directed them for many years.

Weldon loved the Lord and preached for a time at the Strawn Church of Christ and also loved to lead singing. Weldon moved to Eastland and met Bettie Sue Currie at church and they married November 26, 2006.

Weldon was a member of the Daugherty Street Church of Christ in Eastland where a memorial service will be held on December 10, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.

Weldon was preceded in death by his parents and his four brothers: Darrell Lee Smith, Matthew Allen Smith, Laurence Richard Smith and William Edward Smith. He is survived by his wife, Sue and stepdaughter Lesa Herod; two daughters Rebecca and Rachael; a sister Erma Jean and husband Alton Smith; and many nieces and nephews.
