Kenneth Thompson

Kenneth Thompson passed away peacefully on March 19, 2022 at Hendricks Hospice Care in Abilene Texas. Kenneth was a very proud Texan and lived life on his terms which included a deep commitment to community service in Gorman Texas.

He lived and worked his entire life in the Lone Star State as he was born on September 19, 1957 in Gorman to Kinser and Billie Thompson. Being the youngest of 3 siblings he lived in several cities across Texas and graduated from Bridgeport High School where he excelled in athletics.

Kenneth earned his first nickname, the Torch, while at Bridgeport because of his brilliant red hair and his speed on the track and as a star football player. He graduated from Tarleton State University with a degree in education and returned to Bridgeport High for a short tenure as coach and teacher. He was loved and admired by the students and his fellow staff members.

Kenneth idolized his father and followed in his footsteps —leaving teaching to work for Enserch Exploration. He was promoted to supervisor on off shore drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. He would later return to Gorman to assist his uncle and grandparents with their farm and businesses. During this time he invested in his passions: hunting, fishing and grilling ribs.

Kenneth quickly became a pit master and won many competitions; but more importantly he channeled his passion for barbecue and started grilling at the Gorman Community Food Bank. His legacy is one of such selfless acts of service and his strong and positive relationships with his loving friends.

Kenneth is survived by his sister, Brenda and brother, Glynn; as well as his nephew, Chad. His great nieces include Madison, Mary, Katie and Hannah. He will also be remembered by his numerous friends for his jokes and ability to spin great tales. For many he was affectionately known as KT, Sugar and Kenneh.

A private graveside service for family will be held per Kenneth’s wishes.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that you make a donation to your favorite charity and lift your favorite drink in KT’s memory.
