Charles Clifton Mathis was born on October 18, 1944, in Ranger, Texas. He was the son of Lois Mathis, but Caude and Martha Dempsey were his foster parents. Since they were farmers, Cliff was introduced to farming early in life. Later Cliff farmed for the public. He cut and baled hay. Raising goats was his next adventure. Later he and B.J. cut cedar and sold post in Graham.

After retiring one of his greatest pleasures was spending time with the grandkids. We had trips to Possum Kingdom to swim. Fishing with them was fun, too.

On October 17, 1984, he married Mary (Sis) Wesley. They were married almost forty-two years.

Cliff is survived by wife, Mary, son, B.J. Mathis (Meagan), grandchildren, Harley Ackis, Macie Mathis, Weslee Mathis, and Leland Koerner, sister.

Darlene Dudenhoeffer (Daniel), brother, Bobby Alexander (Terry), brothers-in-law, Jack, Dave, and Joe Wesley, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Lois, foster parents Caude and Martha Dempsey, foster brother, Wesley Dempsey and foster sister, Helen Bradford, brother, Barry Mathis and sister Sharon Mathis, and brothers-in-law, Mack, Earl, Jim Wesley

Graveside services is under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home – Ranger to be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Necessity Cemetery in Stephens county, TX. A time of visitation will be available from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the graveside service, allowing friends and family to come together in remembrance and support.
