EASTLAND COUNTY MUSEUM TO HOST QUILT DISPLAY

October 2 through October 27 – Looking for quilts to display

The Eastland County Museum, 114 South Seaman Street, Eastland, will be hosting a quilt display of antique and unusual quilts during the month of October.

Quilting, the art of stitching layers of fabric together, has a rich history spanning centuries and diverse cultures, evolving from practical uses to artistic expressions. Early examples appear in ancient Egypt with quilted garments for warmth and protection, while the Middle Ages saw quilting gain popularity in Europe for decorative purposes. The practice continued to develop, becoming more widespread and artistic with the growth of fabric production in the 19th century.

Quilting experienced a decline with the rise of industrially produced blankets but was revived during the American Bicentennial in the 1970s, coinciding with a renewed interest in traditional crafts. Contemporary quilters continue to explore new techniques and materials, incorporating elements of modern art and culture into their work.

Quilts are now recognized as works of art, with exhibitions and publications dedicated to showcasing their artistic merit.

Do you have a family quilt, or are you a quilter? We would love to display your quilt(s) during this display. We will be accepting quilts for display Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 until 2 at the Museum beginning September 4 through September 20.

Fragile and very old quilts will be displayed in cabinets where they cannot be handled. Others will be hung and displayed to show off their uniqueness, beauty and craftsmanship.

The Quilt Display, like all exhibits at the Eastland County Museum, is free of charge.
