We have just received word of one new confirmed positive test in Eastland County but there are no details as of yet. We still have several other results pending as well as yesterday the National Guard was in Eastland to do COVID-19 testing. The number of people tested by the National Guard were not as high as the previous day of testing. The number of new confirmed cases has gone down in nearby Abilene, which is good news for our county also.

Some have questioned the ideas and the science of social distancing. Yesterday, I reported on how in the Swine Flu epidemic two cities approached the problem differently. The outcomes were significantly different. In 2005, the book “The Great Influenza” by John Barry, was read by President George W. Bush. Having concerns about bioterrorism and the new virus spreading through Vietnam at the time, he enlisted Dr. Howard Hatchett and Dr. Carter Mecher as the biodefense policy advisors. The physicians enlisted several other experts on the spread of infection and the ability to control that spread. They enlisted the help of Dr. Robert Glass of the Sandia Research Center in New Mexico who specialized in advance models to explain how complex systems work and how they fail. They produced a document that became the CDC official US policy called Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions. The Bush administration continued to encourage these investigators to keep it scientific. Two independent teams came to the same conclusion that “Early, aggressive action to limit social interaction using multiple measures like closing schools or shutting down public gatherings was vital to limiting the death toll, they found.”

Again, we thank all those who are keeping their distance, performing hand hygiene and wearing the masks. We will continue to keep you posted. Be kind and safe.

Not only was early testing inappropriate all over US now we have TESTS but not enough notice. Texans aren’t being treated fairly by our governor or the president he wants to please. Just take care of Texas please and fight for our people whose safety is a matter of life and death.

I put the information here on MicroplexNews and shared it on Facebook as soon as we got it. They didn’t give much notice for either of the test dates. It wasn’t the fault of local officials and I don’t know why the National Guard doesn’t give the info any sooner than they have. Dr. DeLuca in his update earlier in the week last week mentioned that they were supposed to be coming back out but he didn’t have the details at that time. Friday the info came out that you could sign up Sunday and be tested Monday. – Julie Elrod, Editor, MicroplexNews.com
