Bailey Updates Eastland EDI Board at July Meeting

On July 12, 2021, a meeting of the Eastland Economic Development, Inc. Board of Directors was held. Members present were; Mark Pipkin, Carolyn White, Jason Cochran and James Doyle. Also present were: Executive Director, Tom Bailey, city secretary, Roma Holley, city Manager, J.J. Oznick and city code enforcement officer, Terry Simmons.

The meeting was called to order at 12:08 p.m. The invocation was offered by Jason Cochran and Carolyn White led the Pledge of Allegiance. The financial report for June 2021 was approved along with the minutes of the June 14, 2021 EEDI meeting.

Director Tom Bailey gave a report on an effort to bring Fiber Internet service to the Eastland area. Mr. Bailey stated that though this is not an EEDI project, businesses as well our citizens and school students are affected by the speed and reliability of Internet in the area.  For that reason,  this project does have an impact on economic growth.  When talking with potential businesses about coming to Eastland, almost every one of them asks about Internet through Fiber.  The West Central Texas Council of Governments is working on a grant to help with this Fiber project.

Mr. Bailey directed the boards attention to a Power Point presentation showing aerial photos of the EEDI Business Park taken by Dwayne Dove utilizing his drone.  Mr. Bailey explained when trying to interest potential businesses in coming to Eastland, one of the things they want to see is the types of acreage available at the business park, not just that “We have some land available.”  They want to see how it can be utilized so these slides present the land as it can be divided.  They show not only the “lay of the land” but also the acreage of the potential plots.

Relating to the agenda item labeled “Walmart,” Director Bailey stated that it might have been misleading to put “Walmart” on the agenda because Walmart is not “doing anything.” I’m actually referring to property adjoining the Walmart property.  Discussion followed regarding potential businesses and opportunities along the north side of the Main Street corridor.

On a motion by Carolyn White, seconded by James Doyle, the meeting was adjourned at 12:45p.m.
