There have been no further positive results for COVID-19 since this past Monday. The county count stands at 6 cases. We are still awaiting the results of several tests around the county. As businesses have increased activity, we still recommend being cautious, washing your hands, face masks and social distancing. Certainly, there is concern for a resurgence in the cases of a novel (new) infection, the cycle of this new virus is not well known.
Science moment: Another area of study for a treatment is a monoclonal antibody. Those individuals who have been infected produce antibodies to the virus. The hope is that these provide some protection from becoming re-infected. Blood from these individuals can be used to extract the B38 antibody. This is an antibody that attaches to the receptor-binding domain on the viral particle. This then blocks the ability of the virus to attach to the ACE2 receptor on the human cell, thus preventing the virus from invading the cell. In the lab they are able to utilize blood from infected donors, to produce more antibodies by “baiting” it with a piece of the spikes of the virus. The cells react, producing more antibodies. Different monoclonal antibodies have been used to treat cancers and rheumatological disorders.
Stay safe, be courteous and wash your hands.
