What an exciting few weeks we have had at the Museum! First, the entire Siebert Elementary second grade class visited. They were treated to a great time courtesy of Mrs. Jeanie Griffin who was thrilled to witness first hand just how much history those young people know of our state, county and city. Kudos to their teachers!

And then an invitation only private viewing of the Humanities Texas exhibit Annexation: Celebrating Texas Statehood on May 1. Great attendance! Including a visit from Mrs. ‘Winnie Lou Addington’, who looked much like her granddaughter Jeanie Griffin, and told of her times living in the frontier of Texas during those turbulent years. And those who were on hand to hear her stories were on the edge of their seats the entire time.

Well, that was some good news, now for some bad! It seems we just can’t get a break on our elevator problems. First, we learn it may cost near $85,000 to bring it up to code. And then the price dropped to around $50,000. About that time the elevator had a hiccup and now we are looking at close to $15,000 just to get it running again. Seems the generator (didn’t even know it had one!), and the hoist motor need to be taken in for repairs. Now $65,000! Wonder if we wouldn’t be better off just upgrading the entire system. Just near $150,000. Anyone out there reading this who would like to donate to the Elevator Fund, your tax deductible donation is greatly appreciated!

Now, back to more interesting and less gloom news. The Texas Historical Commission Regional Workshop held in Eastland on May 16, was greatly attended. People from Irving, Glen Rose, Ranger, Brownwood and more came to Eastland for this informative workshop. Thanks to all who participated! Oh, by the way, lunch was provided by Circle M Barbeque. Thanks to the Miears family for an awesome meal and to Debbie Wharton at the Connellee Hotel for hosting us!

So many exciting things are in the planning stages for the Museum. One important mention is a Day at the Museum for kids coming June 16. More details will be released soon on this fun day. But, if you would like to be a team member and help, contact Jeanie Griffin at 254-631-1345.

Speaking of Team Members, come join Team Museum and help us share the exciting history of Eastland County. Team Members should have a few hours a week or month to spare. Team Members will be host Docents, Special Projects/Events planners, and more. If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a Team Museum member stop by and sign up or contact Anne Zoellick at 629-8397.

The Museum hours of operation are Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

See you next time!

Plans to reactivate a nearly 100 year old pipeline under Lake Leon will be discussed at tonight`s Eastland County Water Supply District meeting

Harlon Gas Processing has plans to transport gas by reactivating an almost 100 year old pipeline that runs under Lake Leon. Some citizens and officials in the area don’t think that’s a good idea.

Hank Smith represented Harlon Gas Processing at the last Eastland County Water Supply District (ECWSD) meeting to explain the process of feeding an insert through the old line and the testing processes he said they have done on the old line. After some questions and answers the item was tabled at that meeting but is on the agenda again for tonight’s meeting. Hank Smith will once again be on hand to answer questions and present a power point presentation on how this process is done.

This pipeline is close to 100 years old and was last used in the early 70s according to Jim Farrar who has been doing some research on the pipeline. One of his concerns is that the gas transported will be odorless, colorless and poisonous. Gas does not receive it’s distinictive odor until Mercaptan is added. The gas transported through this line will be before this product is added. This is a concern if a leak occured either around or under one of the houses along this pipeline.

Ron Holliday, Eastland City Manager, sent a letter to Don Griffin, President of the ECWSD, expressing the city’s concern for the enormous risk of the possibility of contaminating the area’s water source should this project proceed.

Tonight`s agenda allows for public comment on the item and it is anticipated that several will be at the meeting to give information on what they know about the condition of this pipeline and why they think that this should be avoided.

Tonight`s Eastland County Water Supply District meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Filtration Plant, 802 FM 2461 S. Ranger, TX.

A Texas Leadership Institute Workshop: Ten Best Practices for Effective Board Operations is scheduled on June 7 from 8-4:30 p.m.

With the most local school board and city council elections completed, there is no better time than the present to take advantage of the Texas Leadership Institute (TLI) Workshop 5126: Ten Best Practices for Effective Board Operations scheduled from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM on June 7 in Abilene at West Central Texas COG, 3702 Loop 322. This TLI Workshop is hosted by Texas Midwest Community Network and Texas Forts Trail.

If you serve on a board of directors or you get directions for your work from a board then this workshop is ideal for you. “Even if your organization or company has a clear vision and you are moving towards making that vision a reality, topics covered in this workshop will help you reach your goals quicker and more efficiently,” said Dr. Greg Clary, Texas Center for Rural Entrepreneurship (TCRE) Chairman. “Participants will learn how to insure their board is functioning at its optimum potential and that board relationships are strong and productive,” continued Clary.

This high energy interactive workshop qualifies as continuing education credits for school board members and officials and will cover topics such as responsibilities vs. accountabilities, policies and procedures, legal implications, planning and board evaluation. You will take home several tools for your board toolkit along with ten best practices for board success.

Your instructor, Quincy Ellis of Community and Capital Solutions, has the academic background and over 40 years of experience developing and working with boards. He knows about the challenges of working for multiple boards at one time and will share the tools and techniques for effectively managing under these conditions. Mr. Ellis is registered with the Texas Education Agency as a provider of Continuing Education Credits.

The $129 registration fee includes refreshments, lunch and workshop materials.
