Eastland Completes Two New Homes Under Home Program

Home001

The City received a Grant through TDHCA in 2016 to rebuild or renovate three existing homes under the Owner-occupied HOME Program. The HOME program is a competitive application program in which the City of Eastland competed against several other cities to receive the limited number of homes to be funded. Based on the available funds, only three out of twenty applicant cities were funded in the 2016 program cycle. The program is available to low income families who meet HUD income eligibility, own their home and their existing home requires significant renovation/repair. The city accepted applications back in 2016 and after screening the applications and assessing the homes we had three eligible families. The applicants then had to meet ownership requirements before we could proceed with the renovations. Unfortunately, one family could not get clear title for their property and we could only proceed on the remaining two homes.

Mission Construction of Cisco was selected to construct the new homes. The families were given time to remove belongings and were required to move into temporary housing for the duration of construction. The project began in September 2017 with demolition of the existing homes. The homes were completed just two weeks apart. Brenda Gilkey received her keys on January 26, 2018 and Mary Jo Fox accepted her home on February 8, 2018.

The City of Eastland is proud to assist these two families with our 2016 HOME Program. We wish to thank the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs for awarding the city the contract for three homes. We also wish to thank our consultants, Gary Traylor and Associates, as well as the builders, Mission Construction, for these outstanding homes. We look forward to applying for future programs if and when they become available.

Thank you so much. Mary Jo raised me like one of her own grandchildren. I don’t know anyone who deserves this more than my Meemo. She is so loving, caring, and kind. Thank you, Eastland. Maybe the next place could be her brother’s at 611 Green. They are both incredible people. I am so proud of Eastland right now!! With all of my heart, thank you.
