MicroplexNews.com was started by local Eastland DJ, Mike Cockburn. In August of 2009, Martin Warren and myself, Julie Elrod, acquired the domain name with the idea of offering the area as much information as possible, as quick as possible, to as many as possible. Martin is the webmaster and I have been the “man on the streets”. Martin lives outside the area, but I lived in Eastland for over twenty years before moving seven years ago to the Gordon area.
In 2003, which was not many years after the internet hit the Eastland area, I began the online forum, EastlandSpin.com. This came about on the heels of Eastland Internet (now TXOL) dropping the then popular Gordon’s Soapbox forum. EastlandSpin has has been used many times as the place to check for up-to-the-minute information, for instance during the Carbon fires of 2006. It is often used to offer help, prayer, and condolences for neighbors in times of need.
After moving to Gordon and realizing that there was no local media, I thought it would benefit the area to have an online presence which could be used to promote activities, events, and tell the latest news they want shared. When MicroplexNews.com fell into my lap, it seemed the perfect way to make this happen. Just as the Metroplex seems to grow and expand, the “Microplex” would now encompass the area from Gordon to Cisco, TX.
The goal of MicroplexNews.com is to always offer information with no charge to the reader. We encourage area residents to contribute to the growth of MicroplexNews by sending in any information about events, community projects, news tips, or announcements. Opinion articles are also welcomed and encouraged. MicroplexNews.com does not charge for wedding, anniversary, or baby announcements, obituaries, or service clubs and non-profit group’s event announcements. A community calendar is offered and if you have an event or meeting you want on the calendar, send it in.
For the past two years we have offered live audio stream of Strawn Football and last year offered a few Gordon games when internet was available. The plan is to continue the tradition of streaming Strawn Football live with hopes of streaming as many Gordon games as possible. Right now we have the Palo Pinto and Eastland scanners streaming on the site. We have the ability to set up an audio stream anywhere that has a good internet signal and are interested in streaming other teams/sports, meetings, church services, etc.
Although we want all of these services to be offered free to the public, it does not come without cost. If you have a business and would be interested in sponsoring our site, please contact us for advertising rates. If you are an individual and would simply like to donate a few dollars we now offer a way to do that too
