February 26, 2018 – Eastland County commissioners did not take action to lift the burn ban during the commissioners’ meeting this morning.
Desdemona fire chief, Dwight Dold told commissioners they had battled a fire yesterday that came close to a house, several cars and a 5th wheel travel trailer. He said they were fortunate it was in a sand field. A dirt field may have had response vehicles stuck in the field due to the saturated ground from last week’s precipitation. He also stated that they didn’t get as much snow and ice in the southern part of the county as they did in the northern part, reporting only 2-1/4″ inches of precipitation compared to 4″ – 5″ in the Ranger/Eastland /Cisco area. Dold said he thought things would be better in about two weeks when things start turning green. Judge Rex Fields summed it up as “so dry on top of the ground that things are burning easily, but the ground itself is muddy where you can’t get in there and fight it.”
The next county commissioners’ meeting will be held Thursday, March 8th when commissioners will once again assess the burn ban situation.
