Cisco College was informed Thursday that the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) is withdrawing approval of the Associate Degree Nursing Program (ADN) due to NCLEX first-time pass rates below 80% for three consecutive years.

President of Cisco College Bobby Smith stated that, “Cisco College is committed to achieving standards set by the BON for Associate Degree Nursing Programs. We recognize that Board action to withdraw approval is part of a process that is extremely rigorous.”

Problems identified by the Board will be addressed during the teach-out and final semester for our current class of students this spring, ensuring that graduates are well prepared to pass their licensure examinations.

“We anticipate that the current class of ADN students who pass the licensure examination will be well above the 80% mark,” commented Smith.

The college plans to make application for a new ADN Program to present to the Board of Nursing in the near future in order to meet the needs of area vocational nurses seeking to become RNs.

Plans for an expansion of the College’s VN Program, which consistently has NCLEX pass rates between 90-100%, is scheduled for fall 2012.

Wednesday, September 7, is a red-letter day for Ashley Ray and Walker York, both of Cisco.

Wednesday, September 7, is a red-letter day for Ashley Ray and Walker York, both of Cisco. They will be performing at the 8.0 Restaurant and Bar in Fort Worth ahead of Aaron Watson.

“Doing a singer/songwriter contest,” Ashley texted her Facebook friends Tuesday from The Railhead Restaurant in Fort Worth, where 95.9 FM “The Ranch” Radio’s contest is held each Tuesday night.

Then, “We won!!!!! We will be opening for Aaron Watson next week!!”

“Aaron Watson,” remembers Walker York, 22, of Cisco, “is the reason I took up guitar when I did.

“I heard in an Aaron Watson song that Willie Nelson started playing guitar when he was fifteen. Well, I was within two weeks of turning sixteen. I went right down to Al Anderson’s and bought my first one.”

Aaron Watson, from Amarillo, has done well in Texas country music, touring Texas, the nation and Europe. He has released ten albums since 1999. One single, “Hearts are Breaking Across Texas,” reached the state’s #1 spot.

Ashley and Walker have not worked together long, but are excited about the opportunities ahead.

Ashley’s musical influences include Bon Jovi, Miley Cyrus, and Miranda Lambert.

“She’s a natural,” says Walker.

Ashley is an independent insurance agent at Hargrave Insurance in Cisco. She grew up in Willis, Texas, and is married to Mac Ray.

For Walker, music is a love born at home, nurtured in the music studio of Laura Holleman, and fed by the Nancy Seaberry Frost Scholarship Fund. At sixteen he started writing songs. He is active in the Assembly of Yahweh (7th day) music team. He is a member of the Fort Worth Songwriters Association and performs in various venues from Fort Worth to Abilene.

“I owe so many, so much,” he says. “Singing, playing and writing songs is a way to pay that forward.

“Which is nice,” he adds with a laugh, “considering I love it so much.”

Walker is employed by Statewide Glass of Cisco, where he lives with his daughter, Laken.

Join Ashley and Walker at the 8.0 Restaurant and Bar in Fort Worth Wednesday, and watch for them performing closer to home.

WOLFFORTH - Parker Purvis looked like he was in mid-season form during Friday night's Texas Six-Man Coaches Association Division II All-Star Game.

WOLFFORTH – Parker Purvis looked like he was in mid-season form during Friday night’s Texas Six-Man Coaches Association Division II All-Star Game at Peoples Bank Stadium.

The mobile quarterback from Strawn put the East All-Stars up early and terrorized the West defense throughout. He ran for a 5-yard touchdown on the first play of the game, then threw for a 36-yard touchdown on the first play of East’s next drive.

The East took a massive lead into halftime then held off a late West rally to claim a 66-53 victory.

Parker Purvis MVP

“This was a great experience and I’ll always remember it,” said Purvis, who was named the offensive MVP. “We got a big win after practicing all week. A lot of memories here.”

Purvis finished with 177 rushing yards and three touchdowns to go along with 153 yards passing and three more touchdowns.

After opening the game with two touchdowns in as many plays, the East padded its lead with a 20-yard touchdown run from Rising Star’s Alec Apple and a 40-yard pass from Purvis to Milford’s JaMaar Davis.
Loop’s Matthew Sellars rushed for a 16-yard touchdown with 18 seconds remaining in the half that provided some momentary momentum. But Purvis and co. put together a two-play, 42-yard drive to score as time expired. Purvis found Thornhill for a 17-yard touchdown pass to give East a 40-8 lead at the break.

The rout looked inevitable.

“We ran more tight than spread in the first half,” Sellars said. “We stayed with spread more in the second half and needed to get some blocks and finally did.”

The West outscored the East 45-26 in the second half, thanks in part to two more touchdowns from Sellars.

Dawson’s J.J. Vera caught a 2-yard touchdown pass with 2:43 remaining that started an intense, late West surge.

Vera was injured on the play and unable to return, but the rest of the West stepped up.

“It just brought more motivation to the team to try and close the gap and try to win,” Vera said. “We kept our heads up high and played our hardest and managed to come back into the game.”

Reid Copelin caught a 50-yard pass from Riley Majors with 1:04 left and Sellars completed his hat trick with a third touchdown run 35 seconds later.

The West was unable to recover an onside kick attempt following the touchdown.

Sellars finished with 91 rushing yards on 14 carries to go along with his three touchdowns. He and Balmorhea’s Alex Virdell led the West on the ground. Virdell finished with 108 yards and two touchdowns.

Purvis had touchdown runs of 45 and 50 yards in the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference in the game.

But numbers and stats seemed the last thing on his mind following the dramatic victory.

“I grew up with some of these guys,” Purvis said, “from powerhouses in small towns around the state. It was real fun. I made a lot of friends and it was a great, great experience.”
